Solo Exhibition – Digital Ash in a Digital Urn / Lludw Digidol mewn Wrn Digidol

16/06/2012 – 15/09/2012

A young Welsh artist has an important solo exhibition at MOSTYN over the summer season. Gethin Wyn Jones creates geometric landscapes of flat colour that play with perception and space. Brought up in Bangor, North Wales but settled in Devon since graduating from Bath Spa University in 2006, Wyn Jones spent adolescent hours playing computer games to escape the quiet, often rainy, north Wales landscape. The fast vivid space of virtual reality triumphed over the actual rugged attraction of Snowdonia but in his series of works exhibited at MOSTYN he strips back the computer visuals to create something very still, the space perceived beyond the screen, bringing him full-circle to that ‘image’ he would see out outside his window. The works play with the viewer’s perception of space as they both suggest and deny any conventional reading of perspective with the viewer’s position animating the work to create three-dimensional shapes from flat planes. A large-scale wall installation, taking the exhibition title Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, takes Wyn Jones’s work out of the frame, allowing us to engage with it in new ways.

Digital Ash in a Digital Urn are shown in Gallery 1 in MOSTYN until 9 September 2012.

Mae artist ifanc o Gymru efo arddangosfa unigol bwysig ym MOSTYN dros dymor yr haf. Mae Gethin Wyn Jones yn creu tirweddau geometrig o liw gwastad sy’n chwarae gyda chanfyddiad a gofod. Wedi ei fagu ym Mangor, Gogledd Cymru, ond setlo yn Nyfnaint ers graddio o Brifysgol Bath Spa yn 2006, treuliodd Wyn Jones oriau yn chwarae gemau cyfrifiadur i ddianc rhag y dirwedd dawel ac yn aml wlyb y gogledd. Mae’r gofod cyflym o realiti rhithwir gorchfygodd yr atyniad garw gwirioneddol o Eryri, ond yn ei gyfres o weithiau ym MOSTYN mae wedi newid delweddau cyfrifiadurol i greu rhywbeth sydd yn llonydd, mae’r gofod y tu hwnt i’r sgrin, dod ag ef llawn-gylch i fod ‘ddelwedd’ byddai’n gweld allan y tu allan i’w ffenest. Mae’r gwaith yn chwarae gyda chanfyddiad y gwyliwr o ofod wrth iddynt ddau yn awgrymu ac yn gwadu unrhyw ddarllen confensiynol o bersbectif ac yn animeiddio y gwaith i greu siapiau tri-dimensiwn o awyrennau fflat. Mae gosod wal sydd yn cymryd y teitl arddangosfa Lludw Digidol mewn Wrn Digidol, yn cymryd gwaith Wyn Jones allan o’r ffrâm, gan ein galluogi i ymgysylltu â hi mewn ffyrdd newydd.

Lludw Digidol mewn Wrn Digidol yn cael eu dangos yn Oriel 1 ym MOSTYN tan 9 Medi 2012.

Decalcomania, The Exchange, Penzance

24/09/11 – 29/10/11

An exhibition created through a process of invitation and chance. Featuring Ross Birrell, Adam Burton, Ana Carvalho, Maile Colbert, Lucy Gunning, Dominic Hislop, Matthew Hodson, Seung Jung Kim, Darren Norman, Tiago Pereira, Sarah Tripp and Gethin Wyn Jones

Devised by Cornwall-based curators Maria Christoforidou and Laura Smith as an experiment in non-hierarchical curatorial practice and collaboration, Decalcomania aims to create an exhibition through processes of invitation and chance rather than a theme. The process follows a collaborative framework; choosing artists from their professional or social circles, the curators each invited two artists, who in turn invited a further two, creating a total of 12 artists brought together by a process similar to the Surrealists’ notion of ‘objective chance.’

Arddangosfa a grewyd drwy broses o wahoddiad a chyfle. Yn cynnwys Ross Birrell, Adam Burton, Ana Carvalho, Maile Colbert, Lucy Gunning, Dominic Hislop, Matthew Hodson, Seung Jung Kim, Darren Norman, Tiago Pereira, Sarah Tripp a Gethin Wyn Jones.
Llunio gan guraduron sy’n seiliedig ar Cernyw Maria Christoforidou a Laura Smith fel arbrawf mewn ymarfer curadurol an-hierarchaidd a chydweithio, Decalcomania yw arddangosfa trwy brosesau o wahoddiad a siawns yn hytrach nag thema. Mae’r broses yn dilyn fframwaith cydweithredol, gan ddewis artistiaid o’u cylchoedd proffesiynol neu gymdeithasol, gwahodd y curaduron dau artist, sydd yn ei dro yn gwahodd dau arall, gan greu cyfanswm o 12 o artistiaid yn dod at ei gilydd drwy broses debyg i syniad Swrealwyr o ‘cyfle gwrthrychol.’
